Public release delayed, but not for kickstarter and pre order nomads

    https://www.planet-nomads.com/2017/0...eorder-nomads/

    Our Dearest Nomads,

We have to admit this Easter holiday weekend has been the craziest weekend we ever had during the development of Planet Nomads. As you probably know Planet Nomads was supposed to launch tomorrow...

During the past weeks everybody on the team has been working so hard on hitting the release deadline that we somehow lost sight of what's really important - to make Planet Nomads into an exciting and highly enjoyable survival sandbox game that is amusing and joy to play.

Fortunately we do have a burning and passionate community that's been showing signs of us going astray. Even more importantly, the Alpha Nomads voiced their concern about the future of the game, should it release in its current state to the general gaming public.

BETWEEN A ROCK AND A HARD PLACE
The reason why you are learning about the delay one day before the intended launch is that for a long time we felt like we had no other choice but to launch. We felt responsible to keep our promise to every Nomad who preordered the game or backed it on Kickstarter. The more we fought this, the more the Alpha Nomads kept pushing back and the more we knew they had been right. The initial panic and heart-squeezes were quickly turned into action. We had one of the hardest decisions to make and then it hit us.

EVERY BACKER AND PREORDER NOMAD CAN PLAY 18TH APRIL
We can deliver the current version of the game to every backer through Steam just like we did with the alpha version (and soon the same will be possible on GOG). That way we keep our promise to the people who have been following the development of Planet Nomads and know what the game is and what's it going to be. Kickstarter and Preorder Nomads, you will get a key in your e-mail tomorrow, little after 4 pm Central European Summer time (GMT+2). This marks another stage of the game; one that could be marked as closed-beta. To people looking forward to becoming Nomads themselves we apologize for the inconvenience of waiting a few weeks longer than intended.

WHY IS THE LAUNCH DELAYED THEN?
The game deserves to have many of its details to be better. The tiny details that create the first impression and perception of a game. It would be a shame to let Planet Nomads go out without them. We saw what we were able to achieve in the past few weeks and we know a few weeks more will do wonders for Planet Nomads fighting chances.

We are confident Kickstarter and Preorder Nomads realize the game is in an early stage of development and only going to grow and improve from here. You will find the current version reasonably polished, and ripe with potential and things to discover. However, there's a chance somebody seeing Planet Nomads for the first time might not have such understanding. The perception of Early Access titles has changed dramatically over the years and moreover there are users who don't clearly understand what Early Access is about.

We counted on possible negative reviews stemming from misconceptions about Early Access titles to be balanced by ratings from our backers, but alas, with the September 2016 update on Steam, review scores from Steam keys distributed outside the Steam ecosystem (e.g. via Kickstarter) are no longer calculated to the overall rating.

WHEN IS PLANET NOMADS EARLY ACCESS HAPPENING?
As mentioned above, a few more weeks will be enough to prepare Planet Nomads for public contesting. We have agreed on May and are now figuring out the exact date. We'll have a series of meetings so that every team member can express what they'd like to add and how much time they need for that. We're then going to match that with the Alpha feedback one more time and make a final decision. On Thursday we'll let everyone know the May date and also the features that are getting a tune-up.

We realize this is a very non-standard situation. We are fully aware of the consequences, but know this has been a carefully weighted decision and one we believe will work best for Planet Nomads and its growing gaming community.

This has been a long and tiresome process, so we'll keep you updated in the upcoming days.

    Thank you,
    Craneballs

    Good choice.

May I suggest to start doing frequent updates. It's better to get quick responses to changes than to get them all at the last moment. We can handle it if you break the build occasionally. Or you could use the alpha branch for it.

I couldn't agree more. If it wouldn't be more troublesome to do frequent updates, then I also think that is a good approach.

I'm very glad you guys made that decision, and if we can help you guys with anything more other than testing the game, reporting bugs, and telling others about Planet Nomads, then please let us know. Benjamin mentioned several times that he has an artistic (background?), and Hrafna has programming skills, so does Soryn. So maybe they can help with something if they are willing.

Very glad, very very glad on this approach guys. : D

I've been following Planet Nomads for quite a while now. I didn't back the kickstarter, because I just wanted to wait and see, but I've been encouraged by what I have seen and I was eagerly awaiting the launch.

I was disappointed to hear about the delay. But that quickly turned into reassurance when I found that the delay had come from actually listening to the Alpha Testers. It won't kill me to wait a little longer, and I'll most likely be happier with the result. I'm so glad to find a development company who actually listen to the people using the software. It's clear to me that this isn't just an overhyped cash grab (like some other well-known space game that I'm sure we all know). It's clear to me that Craneballs actually want their game to be good and they are dedicated to making that happen.

Thanks, Craneballs. You have given me confidence about your game. Thanks for listening to people (and thanks to those people in Alpha for saying what needed to be said). It can't have been an easy choice for anyone involved.

As a caution: I hope you have the judgement to know when to listen. If you listen to everybody too much when you're adding stuff, you'll be in danger of ending up with a game that's bloated and directionless. Stick to your goals. Stick to your vision. Make the game you intended to at the start (within reason). I don't want this to end up like Star Citizen: an ever expanding idea that never becomes a reality.

That aside, I think you made the right choice in this case. I'm still eager to see the release. Still full of excitement and anticipation. But also reassured with the knowledge that the first version I see will be better than it would have been now.

Thanks again. Best of luck with the release.

I've not got one either, but I think it just takes a little bit of time, so I'm patiently waiting ;)

Well, steam just updated PN about 20 minutes ago, and the version number on the start screen says 0.5.1. Not sure if this is the "closed beta" mentioned above. Still no email with the steam key, again mentioned above, despite the fact that here it is almost 6 hours after the 4pm CEST timeframe mentioned. Is this update what we were waiting for or will a steam key show up in my inbox at some time? Looking forward to seeing the game as I didn't get to play much on the 0.5.0 version when it updated a few days ago. However, it looks like I will have plenty of free time over the next day or two to try it out.

pretty sure you don't get a key, if you already have one.

Alpha nomads got one a while back.
i think the key is for non-alpha backers.

Your badge says you are an Aplha Nomad, and based on your comment you have the game already. So you won't receive a new key. Only those get a key who backed lower than alpha or pre-ordered the game on the website. Effectively who bought the game already but didn't had it before.

Those of us who already have the game, it's "business as usual".

Oh. Makes sense ;) However, with the wording in the original press release post, it makes it sound like there will be a different key:

"Kickstarter and Preorder Nomads, you will get a key in your e-mail tomorrow, little after 4 pm Central European Summer time (GMT+2). This marks another stage of the game; one that could be marked as closed-beta."

Also, in the properties dialogue of PN on steam client there is a place to put in a code for "private beta" testing.... sooo... will this be a different key or are we already in the "closed beta" program with the 0.5.1 update?

PS: Don't mean to sound nit-picky... just I am stuck at my desk at the moment with a few hours more to go and nothing to do... lol.

Ok, now that Azirahael and fura cleared that up, it all makes sense. But a big problem for me has occurred because of it... Now that I am anticipating going home this evening and firing it up, the clock has slowwed way down! Now it seems like the minutes are just dragging by. ;D

So, for those that have already started in on it, how does it run compared to 0.5.0?

for me: no difference at all.

Or at least, not that i could see.
Same blocks, same unlocks, same graphics, same speed.
If there are balance changes, i don't see them.

And no patch notes yet, so i have no idea what to look for.

[Edit: more big rocks, and they have ore now.]

Well, once you have it up and running, select 'games' at the top, and from the menu, select 'activate game on steam' and paste your code in there.

This assumes that the key that GOG gave you is FOR steam.
