Question What Do You Think? Separate Tools (Drill, Cutting)

I feel that having the same tool for everything takes away from the game, I feel that the tools should be more specialised which can really add to the game dynamics like upgrading a drill only and having efficient tree cutting tools rather than have the same tool for everything including gathering.

Personally I do think one tool is fine. It is the future where matter can be teleported so to speak. One tool makes life easier then having to switch all the time. You can now also mine in a distance, which is excellent. Having more traditional short range tools would make mining very akward due to the way the world engine works.

I'd very much like to have the original tools shown in the promo video. For me personally, the beam is too magical even in sci-fi context, and I don't find it immersive.

I think if this tool remains, it should be at least improved with better effects and sounds, to be at least at the No Man's Sky level (it has a quite similar tool).

I'd like separate tools, or at least separate modes.
One problem I am constantly having is when I am cutting down a tree, or killing a mob, I miss and dig a hole (especially with the mk 4 tool). This results in pot holes all over the place. Having separate tools would eliminate this.

I think it's fine for now.

But, I'd like the cutter and physical drill back, at least in the early stages, just like in the trailer.

The current multitool looks... cheap, for lack of a better phrase.
It' looks kind of like the thing somebody would do on a budget game, to avoid moving parts or animation.

    As a placeholder, no problem.
But if this is the new way forward, eh, i'd prefer the old one back.

    Empyrion has a similar setup.
But their 'beam do everything' WAS a placeholder, and they have a low tech mechanical drill, and an advanced plasma drill that picks things up, and has more range.

I strongly agree, the local area around my base looks like it has been subject to artillery bombardment.

+1 for separate tools.. also I would like to have better control of voxel destruction when mining.. to make somewhat flat surface is nearly impossible, some kind of flatten tool would be nice as well..

+1 for flatten tool! Also, I am good with individual tools or one multitool, or some kind of combination of both (beginners have individual tools, higher tiers add more tools into the one tool.)....

I also lend support to the flatten/smooth tool as I suggested similar in the suggestions part of the forum.

Another idea I had was to have the cross-section the tool mined as well as the depth mined to be adjustable with larger sizes with upgraded tools.

+1 on the flattening tool. And by that I not necessarily mean a handheld device. Could be a larger drill/excavator attachable to a vehicle

On the original topic. At first I haven't had any objection against the multi-tool. Actually I'm still relatively happy with it, as it is convenient and I'm the lazy kind of guy
But with the higher tier upgrades I manage to dig more and more unwanted potholes... Especially when cutting trees as the pieces start to roll even on the smallest elevation. So having separate tools are getting more an more appealing.

I would much prefer separate modes rather than separate tools. Again, this is meant to be heavily futuristic. So in light of keeping the game as on target as possible having the ability for like a checklist

    [ ] Terraform enable/disable
    [ ] gather biological
    [ ] Mining
    [ ] Construction/deconstruction

This is a heavily primitive check list, but ya. I could have someone draw up something that looks much better and more like this game if the request comes around.

+1 for multi modes of operation
+1 for flattening/filling modes of operation
-1 for multiple tools unless we get lots more tool/equipment slots than the 4 currently available

Empyrion has a right click radial menu for the tool mode, makes it very convent and easy to use while limiting the tools effect to a specific mode of operation, their drill has multiple modes like terrain flattening or filling (for holes), both of which are very much needed here (just do a better job of terrain modifications please)

As for the original question of 1 tool or multiple tools I remind you that we only have 4 quick access slots, so tool switching would be a major pain to deal with on a regular basis

+1 on a flattening option and we also need an option to fill terrain.

Pointing out that there are only 4 equipment slots is a good point to not have multiple tools, but multiple modes only. I hate to see the screen more cluttered with slots, it is quite nice now.

I prefer having the one tool so that space on the hotbar and my inventory is freed up.
