Auto pilot. Something (pull down menue?) that I can operate in cockpit. Simple "point to point". Blood flow stops going to my finger during long transits. Ok, not really.....Still.

There's been a suggestion for "auto-run" in the pipeline forever. Something like pressing Caps Lock to have it just drive forward until you hit it again (or the brake). Essentially a cruise control type of feature.
The planet is too irregular and random for an autopilot feature to work, without some serious terrain following AI incorporated into the system. Driving a car from point A to point B in a straight line is typically impossible, unless you don't mind getting stuck upside down in a ravine 30 seconds after you start driving, that is. Hover has similar issues, there is a lot of navigation needed around obstacles and geographical pitfalls (sometimes literally). Flying has a little more leeway, but look away while it's buzzing in a straight line and you could end up face first in the side of a mountain, and likely flipped over at the moment.
Agree especially as regarding driving/running. With flying you would have to (as any pilot would) monitor your terrain. I figure that once you set your altitude and airspeed auto pilot would eliminate the need to continuously hold the W key.
It does not need to be complex...just a 'cruise control' switch. Click to engage...and it stays engaged until you click again.
How a player chooses to use it is down to them then. If you use it while driving on rough terrain...you will crash. But...that's your own fault!
Use it on a flyer or on a boat...and it makes sense. Especially as you will still have steering control that way.
I don;t expect a full on auto pilot....that's very complex.... but a simple key to reduce the need to sit there holding the damn 'W' button down for half an hour at a time while you fly back from the pole to your equatorial base...now that I would appreciate!
I agree in keeping it simple; a simple ”W” lock/auto-drive would be great, and if it is not too much more work a “W+SpaceBar” lock would be grand.
Ctrl+A = Autopilot
ALT+A = Autopilot-Plus
S to turn off autopilot

Like this? Been there, requested that!
Do not forget to turn it off automatically when you exit the cockpit...
Best option would be to allow the mouse wheel to set the power for forwards and backwards speed in 5 or 10 % increments so that we can limit the speed to a level where maneuvering the vehicle is still manageable depending on the terrain and the frame rate. Any power that is no spent on maintaing speed should be used to increase torque, so that wheeled vehicles would be far more better at climbing hills.
With hover- and airblades that should translate to being able to tilt the blades more the closer we are to the ground or the sea level.
or like in Mechworrier Online:
Numpad 1-9 will set speed to 10-90%, 0 will set to 100%, as soon you press one of your regular controle buttons, wsad, it will be reset.
