    Serious collision issues post rollback

    Driving my planet explorer through the trees was never a problem before. It's big and heavy and knocks hte trees down without difficulty. I then clean up the bits for bio paste. Not so now. Mostly..it's OK. Then the thing goes haywire on collision.

    This:



    suddenly turns into THIS:





    All the hinges, pivots and axles have detached .... breaking the thing up into it's respective sub grids, which have been launched up in the air at high speed. The game then goes super laggy as they tumble around in the air...still going up. I wasn't prepared to wait long enough to find if they ever go down again.

    When I hit the tree, I was doing around 30 Kmh .....

    This has happened more than once.

    Just an idea, but maybe if the hinges and rotating plates would have a setting for how many degrees they they can turn, we could limit their movement without needing to create structures around them that may cause issues with the physics and the collision detection?

    Generally this happens when Unity physics gets into some "impossible" state, like pulled apart joins, intersected colliders and so on. This may happen by some very hard collision at rare occasions but it shouldn't be frequent. In 0.8.6.1 there's nothing that should fix it, so it shouldn't have get "unfixed" by reverting back. But it's strange that it was good before and isn't now.

    Could you please send your save file, so I would have a look at it, eventually fix it. Thank you.

    The screenshot shows the thing has come apart at all the joints, both hinges and pivots, so that makes sense.

    May just be coincidence that it's happening now.

    I've tried your save, it loaded well, was a little laggy on my debug environment, but enough for me to realise how funny could cutting trees by your beast be. We plan to add block destruction into the survival, so we'll really need to make a switch into game settings .

    But back to the topic. I've cut down like hundreds of trees and stones, the joints was very overloaded sometimes, but it didn't go that bad as on your image. It managed to stay connected. Do you remember if this bug happened during collision to tree standing in place for longer time that you crashed into, or if tree did just appear inside of your vechicle during terrain chunk load?

    We have reports of stones and trees appearing inside vehicles during movement. This can happen more frequently if you have set high object visibility distance. This means more objects to generate at once. Object generation is one of the most time consuming operations in the game. We postpone this generation to next frames, if it takes a lot of time, to avoid at least some lags. But if this deficiency counts up, it meas that objects are generated slow and you are able to get into place that has no objects yet. When they come in the row, they just appear with it's dangerous collider, even if you stand on the same spot. This sudden big collision is the main reason for vehicles going to space trip, in my humble opinion.

    We cannot do much with the object spawning speed, as we've already did some optimizations, like reusing old objects instead of generating new ones. W could stop the game until all objects generate, but it'll mean even bigger lags than there that are in the game now. You can only try to lower terrain/object visibility settings. The only thing that striked me, and we'll probably do it very soon, is to alter behavior of spawned object to wait a short time between spawn and activating colliders. Or to check if anything is in the reach of newly built collider before enabling it. Hope this will help to fight the issue.
