0.6.3 Update paving the way for mobile bases, trailers and trap doors

Today's 0.6.3 update brings quite a few things to make the Nomadic life more bearable. You'll find them in the patch notes on Steam (or our forum).

It's most important impact, however, lies in physics. Two little gems of blocks have been added - a rotating plate and a hinge. They might be small on their own, but boy the possibilities they open! When we had first tested them in alpha before Planet Nomads launched on Steam, we'd seen merry-go-rounds, wheel-operated blast doors and goal-scoring football players. The things that make perfect candidates to be featured in Nomadic Journals in the Ingenious Spotlight section.

    Physics Are Super-Steady Now

Ever since we began this journey and introduced vehicles in the first alpha version in August last year, the physics engine has been riddled with wobbling wheels that would tear any more complex vehicle into pieces and eventually take it off the planet surface. No more. Today's update fixes that. Watch the video below to see what we mean.

It's not 100% bullet-proof. But it's about 80% of pure improvement. And that counts. Further good news - we believe we can improve it even more. If you still manage to get your vehicle flying, send us the save and we'll do some tests and play some tricks.

    The Next Steps

Talking about improvements, our goal is to bring the review score of Planet Nomads on Steam to 80% positive reviews. We are convinced that every update for the game will bring us closer to that mark, especially the major ones coming later in summer.

We plan to remove the Swiss cheesiness of planets while keeping caves in. However this change isn't possible without wiping saves - because it requires changes in the noises generating the planet, and afterwards the planets generated from identical seeds will be different and the things you've built could be... weird (as in levitating weird, completely submerged weird, on a different part of the planet weird).

So we're going to compound all wipe-requiring changes (less holes on the planet, better animal path-finding, new starting biome) into a single update. Then we start working on a new set of planets with new biomes, which can be changed without affecting the original ones (AKA no wipes needed).

That's it for today's update. We know you guys eagerly await the FOV changer and key bindings. They are coming a bit later. Looks like it could be next week already.

For now, enjoy the new physics experience.

    Take care, Nomads.

I hope you came up with ideas that make vehicles more useful.

I'm eagerly waiting for the next step and hope vehicles will become totally drivable on the terrain. Thanks for the update and all your work on the game!

,sry devs, but I recalled PN and its hill climbing problems when I saw this gif.

Btw, even in 0.6.3 it is quite hard to drive uphill.
The more you know, the crazier you look.

Yup, ideas for making vehicles even more useful are planned.

Harrison - are you sure it's not caused by the wheels touching one another? (A huge no-go for the physics engine!)

Jimmy - Hope your idea of driving 3+ tons vehicles uphill is not summed up by the gif you mention Because then I'm afraid you will never be 100% happy about it. Not sure if we want vehicles to be professional climbers. Anyway, a video will help a lot, so we can set the mark between a bug and feature.

Yep I know, I just teasing you a little. No hard feelings ;)

I am curretly making a video about few different versions of vehicles I made and how they work( or doesnt ), I just need to instal video edditing sw and I hope I will make it in time before you relase new patch ant it will became a little bit outdated ;) .

But I made vehicle in 0.6.1, which were pretty close to that one in the gif, just wheels dont lose traction while they are still pushing vehicle forward, tossing the scattered pieces of land behind them ..... and also there is no way to build vehicle that can drift, now vehicles just flip over or made very sharp turn. It would be fun to be able to power only rear wheels, while turning the front ones , it could give the vehicles the feeling that they miss and even give reason for some players to choose them over hover vehicle, just to have fun whith it. Maybe you will suprise me and you already had it planned? :-))) .

Btw, I wondered, why suspensions are wobbling in all direcrions instead just up and down? It then does some pretty weird stuff, at least when you connect at least two suspensions to work like one piece ( like you already seen it in my Crawler video ), ofc question is, if you intend suspension to work that way - able to stack them.
Only thing that comes to my mind is that it is one way of fixing orbital vehicles as rotors and hinges are doing it too.

PS: how unfair is that you devs know how mutch your vehicle weight, as I have no clue how heavy are mine creations , but the way how some bigger designs move I would say it can weight way over 10 tons ^^

Any wobbling (sideways especially) is an undesired behavior that happens when the forces get out of hand. Looking forward to the video.

Vehicles have come a long way from 0.6.1, so I'm not sure if there's a point going there, it just creates more confusion as to where we are at currently and what needs to be looked at still.

Drifting was originally part of the wheel formula but it was causing more troubles than joys, so we've removed it until some time in the future.

PS: Every block has a weight in the block catalog. Guess the number of blocks used, multiply, there you have it

Really? I did not seen it anywhere. I noticed that now, I am able to see how mutch energy block produce or need, or how big cargo it have, but not weight - bug?

There you go ;) , fell free to comment.
I must say, I am quite satisfied whith this video as it was +-8 years since I made my last video. I found few bugs in my video, but it is not that bad so I dont need to go throught encoding and uploading it again

Ouch. My mistake. I thought we still had those.
